SFT1-051306.jpg - The spadefoot toad  Scaphiopus holbrookii holbrookii  lives in the sandy areas of the Cape and breeds, if conditions are right, in vernal pools and exceedingly ephemeral wetlands in the Province Lands.  Breeding requires an inundation of rain in spring or summer.  Spadefoot toad require particular contions for breeding and may go for several years without a sucessful seaslon.
