| High in the hill country of western Massachusetts, deep within the hemlock forest, are vernal pools which might well be termed "pristine". Although nearby stone fences show the area was farmed in 18th and 19th century, there are no drainage channels in or out of these two pools. Their position deep within adjacent hills suggest they have for many years collected and held water and thus provided breeding habitat for vernal pool species. |
