Nearly 2000 years ago the prehistoric Hopewell Indians constructed earthworks adjacent to the Little Ohio River. Today these structures are called Fort Ancient. While these structures were unlikely to have been a fort, their actual purpose is unclear. However, the borrow pit construction, still popular throught the world, created depressions which collected water and became vernal pools. Thus, we have vernal pools created by man 2000 years ago. Vistors should not walk on the earthworks nor wade in the vernal pools. These photographs were produced during a survey by the Ohio EPA.
