| Fairy shrimp, female, Eubranchipus vernalis. The female fairy shrimp is identified by the brood pouch with eggs. Fairy shrimp filter-feed on detritus in a vernal pool. Their encysted eggs drop to the pool bottom and must dry before hatching when re-submerged. This wet-dry component of their life cycle obligates them to live in temporary wetlands. | |
