Where to Find Publications

Your local book store is always a good beginning when looking for general publications such as field guides and overviews of habitats. More specific, technical, or privately published materials are a bit more difficult to locate.

Our favorite source of natural history publications is Pat Ledlie, Bookseller.

Vernal Pool Association Publications
Wicked Big Puddles by Leo P. Kenney is a guide to the study and certification of vernal pools. It contains instructions for certification, vernal pool natural history and organism identification, and color photographs of organisms and vernal pools. $13
Diving Into Wicked Big Puddles, edited by Leo P. Kenney is a resource kit for educators. It contains vernal pool related activities (many interdisciplinary) including the use of graphics in the classroom for scientific presentation. Also includes 80 photographic slides with notes and scripts for vernal pool instruction. $75

Massachusetts Audubon Society Publications
Certified, edited by Betsy Colburn, is a guide to certification and protection of vernal pools in Massachusetts. It provides details about certification and the laws which affect vernal pools. $9.
Vernal Pool Lessons and Activities by Nancy Childs and Betsy Colburn is a companion volume to Certified. It has a variety of activities for teachers which involve vernal pools and their organisms. $7.50.
Pond Watchers Guide is one of the laminated field sheets that Massachusetts Audubon is producing. Through illustrations and text, it provides a waterproof companion for the vernal pool visitor. $3.95.
The Nature of Massachusetts by Christopher Leahy, John Hanson Mitchell, and Thomas Conuel is both beautifully written and superbly illustrated. It has descriptions of the organisms and physiography of the various biological communities of Massachusetts, including vernal pools. An excellent resource. $36 (special price through this web site).
