Calling Anuran Surveys

woodfrog in calling position The Calling Anuran Survey (CAS) is one of four techniques that the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program (NAAMP) has proposed for monitoring the amphibians in this part of the world. One of the main questions of our research attempts to determine the accuracy of these calling surveys. All CAS will follow protocol outlined in the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program with several modifications designed for replication purposes. Whereas the NAAMP CAS is typically employed on a transect with 3-5 minute point counts (to cover several wetland areas), all CAS in our study are conducted at a single breeding site for a minimum of 30 minutes, data being recorded every 2 minutes. Additionally weather data such as air and water temperatures and humidity are taken at 10-minute intervals during the CAS. The CAS field season began in late Feburary and will end mid-July.
