Because the pool loses all or most of its water, often during the summer, vernal pools are free of fish. Even the pools that retain water all year round have levels of oxygen too low to support fish. Many species, such as the mole salamander, have adapted to living or breeding in the vernal pool to avoid predation by fish. They trade off the risk of an early drying pool for the relative safety of its fish-free waters. |
