Although mole salamanders generally return to their own birth pool to lay their eggs, some do attempt breeding in unfamiliar wetlands they encounter on their migration. In this manner, a population might establish new breeding sites or re-colonize old sites. Often, these explorers end up in unsuitable areas such as waters which dry too quickly or man-made structures such as pools, drainage basins and fountains. |
