salamander in fountain Although mole salamanders generally return to their own birth pool to lay their eggs, some do attempt breeding in unfamiliar wetlands they encounter on their migration. In this manner, a population might establish new breeding sites or re-colonize old sites. Often, these explorers end up in unsuitable areas such as waters which dry too quickly or man-made structures such as pools, drainage basins and fountains.
