Welcom to Vern's Story 17
Vern digs a salamander tunnel
Many mole salamanders and other amphibians are killed by cars as they attempt to cross roads on migratory nights to and from vernal pools. Over 10 years ago, the Massachusetts Audubon Society installed a tunnel for these migrating amphibians to lower this mortality. The tunnel was constructed from an old airport drain and crosses under a road in Amherst, Massachusetts. Near the tunnel a drift fence was set up to guide salamanders to the tunnel. Tunnels similar to this have been developed and built in Europe for the last thirty years.
