Vern with radio on his back.
Radio transmitters are a frequently used and effective way to track the migratory habits of salamanders. These transmitters can be attached to the back externally or implanted in the abdomen. While these transmitters have many upsides, such as they are able to detect movement for 15-100m, providing information on their habitats, breeding and migratory behavior, there also are many downfalls to these transmitters. Some problems include difficulty in securing transmitters to the salamanders, short life span of batteries and interference in the migration habits caused by removing the salamanders from the wild.
