Springing!

Around much of Massachusetts and points south, spring appears to be springing. Despite the remnant patches of snow and paltry rain event on March 29 into 30, a few intrepid salamanders came out to begin their spring breeding activity in a patch of woods a few miles north of Boston. Wood frogs and spring peepers were calling too. We haven't seen a big migration event yet, but we're right on the cusp! Stay tuned!


Reading about the early stirrings of the vernal pool season really makes me appreciate the subtle shifts in nature that most of us usually drive right past. I found the detail about the wood frog's "antifreeze" capabilities particularly fascinating; the idea that they can essentially freeze solid and then just thaw out to start their migration is such a resilient bit of evolution. It’s a nice reminder to slow down and look for those first signs of life in the damp woods.
